FAQ

Two of the most common types of wax used in candle making are soy wax and paraffin Wax.  Soy wax is a natural wax derived from soy beans whereas paraffin wax is derived from petroleum and created using crude oil.  While soy wax burns cleaner, it doesn't necessarily mean paraffin wax doesn't burn clean.  All waxes suitable for candles have to meet several federal regulations to classify it as clean burning.  As far as scent throw, paraffin wax candles typically have a stronger scent.  On a molecular level, soy is denser than paraffin. Because soy is denser, it requires more heat to burn it up which can take longer for soy to release the fragrance. As the wax melts, the flame’s heat vaporizes the liquid wax which diffuses the fragrance oil into the air. So, if paraffin burns up easier, it will generally release the fragrance easier making the scent throw stronger or more prevalent.  With that said, choosing between a paraffin and a soy wax candle is often just personal preference.  Some people like a really strong scented candle and other people like a more subtle scent!

Ever wonder about how to actually burn a candle?  Before I started making candles, I realized there actually "rules" to make the experience better and get the most from your burning experience.

Soy candle wax has a memory, and when you burn it and then extinguish it, the next time you burn it, the soy candle wax will only melt to the same point as it did the first time.

The first time you burn your candle, it's important to burn to the edge of the container to ensure that your candle does not “tunnel” as it burns, leaving un-melted wax along the sides.

Cotton wicks will "mushroom" after you burn them, as this is a natural characteristic of the wick.  Trim the wick to approximately 1/4 " before each burn.  If you don't do this, the wick will pop like a mini explosion and often can leave little pieces of the wick in your wax.

Keep candle away from flammable materials including paper, clothing, matches and wick trimmings. Only burn the candle on a level, fire resistant surface. Do not burn the candle for more than 3 to 4 hours each time.
